My father started in the construction business in the 1970s, working general contracting jobs all over the city. He had an eye for foundation problems before most people even thought about them — he used to say that the house was only as good as what it was sitting on, and if you ignored the foundation, the rest of the house was just window dressing.
I grew up going to job sites with him on weekends, learned to read a foundation by the time I was twelve, and started working summers in the business at fifteen. When I went out on my own in 2003, I already had nearly twenty years of experience, even if my license had only been active for a few years. I focused specifically on foundation work because I'd seen too many general contractors treat it as an afterthought.
My first job on my own was a South Philly rowhouse on Tasker Street — a horizontal crack in a brick basement wall that the previous contractor had patched with hydraulic cement and left. It was a bandaid on a problem that needed actual treatment. I repaired it properly, the homeowner referred me to her neighbor, and that's how it started.
Over the past 20+ years, we've worked on more than 500 homes throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. We've fixed foundations in every neighborhood in the city — from the dense rowhouse blocks of South Philly and Kensington to the historic stone homes of Chestnut Hill and Germantown, to the post-war block foundations of the Northeast.
Each neighborhood has its own set of challenges. The clay soil that South Philly sits on behaves differently than the fill in lower Fishtown or the glacial deposits under parts of the Northeast. We've learned these local conditions through experience, not textbooks.
